The Overlooked Upgrade: Garage Flooring

The Overlooked Upgrade: Garage Flooring

Most homeowners never glance twice at their bare concrete slab garage floors, but they might if they knew about the affordable, durable, and far more attractive flooring options on the market today. Whether you’re looking to build a showroom for your collection of vintage cars, or maximize the utility space of your garage workshop, there’s a floor for you.

Floor Mats

Pre-cut flooring mats, like the one above from Home Depot, are an easy way to dress up a parking spot, provide some extra cushion for your feet while you work in your garage, or even add some surface texture to reduce slips trips and falls. Home Depot also carries heavy duty rubber mats that are perfect for a gym garage, so you can drop a 40-pound dumbbell without chipping the ground. These are the most wallet-friendly flooring option, coming in typically between $1.50-$3.00/sq. ft.

Floor Tiles

For the old-school-cool, 50’s-era diner lover, Costco sells a line of flooring tiles that make a fine match for an antique car collection (Elvis sold separately). These are made from a sturdy and resilient polymer, and are reasonably priced at roughly $3.12/sq. ft., cheaper than most competitors’ offerings.

Looking for something more luxurious? Costco also sells sleek vinyl tiles that are water resistant, and available in shades of slate, sandstone, or titanium, priced at $5/sq. ft. Porcelain tiles can surprisingly be installed in a garage with gorgeous and durable results, but to prevent cracks they need to be installed with maximum contact with the underlying cement, and preferably with a crack isolation membrane underneath.

Epoxy Paint

Epoxy coatings provide your slab with shock resistance, chemical resistance, water resistance, and make cleaning a breeze. There are dozens of options out there, with different colors and levels of sheen, and many come with vinyl color chips to add variety to an otherwise plain surface. Be sure to rigorously prep your floor before applying the resin, to create a tighter bond and prevent sealing in defects. Most options, like this Rust-Oleum Epoxy from Lowe’s, cost around $4/sq. ft.
